         Institutional Collaborations

            HC-DAPNED has developed institutional/ organizational
collaborations with various national and international networks of conservation
professionals including International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS),
RLICC and UNESCO University and Heritage. Present state of apathy prevailing in
historic towns and areas within Pakistan, threatening survival of traditional
built environments not given much regard in development policies nor have much
support in the regulatory processes. In this perspective HC-DAPNED endeavours to
promote and build awareness to support heritage preservation, Pakistan.

After persistently campaigning for the heritage designation of identified properties,
the initial step of ensuring legal protection to these properties is now achieved.
Take steps for further professional advancement in terms of capacity building for
technical support and guidance to assist active conservation and preservation initiatives,
and develop methodologies to steer official policy making and support self initiated efforts
on part of heritage property owners and resident communities towards better management,
maintenance and monitoring of collective heritage assets.

The lack of locally available resources for conducting scientific research to develop
strategies for effective monitoring, management and sustenance of historic areas; and
            achieve technological advancement for preservation treatments of historic materials;
has hampered progressive development in this field within the country and makes it
necessary that efforts are made to seek possibilities for collaboration and exchange
            from the international arena.

            ICOMOS Pakistan Secretariat

DAPNED has provided a base for

ICOMOS Pakistan Secretariat, where the staff of HC-DAPNED
volunteer their time in maintaining ICOMOS Pakistan National Committee’s membership records,
regularly disseminating information on events and activities of heritage conservation including
training opportunities, seminars and conferences, etc. to all its members, organizing activities
on 18th of April every year to mark the ‘International Day of Monuments and Sites’ and ensure
access to publications received by ICOMOS Pakistan Secretariat at the departmental archives
            as ‘ICOMOS-ICCROM Collection’.

Department of Culture, GoS - Role in an Advisory Capacity

Through its research based projects and student works the HC-DAPNED has developed a substantial resource of documentation on historic buildings in Karachi and shares this information database on voluntary basis with the Department of Culture, Government of Sindh, and entertains requests from their Technical Advisory Committee for Heritage providing details and technical information on specific cases. Based on reports submitted by HC-DAPNED over the years, many pending issues for heritage properties have been resolved or pending decisions are taken. Over … technical reports have been submitted to the Department of Culture since 2006.
About 32 detailed technical reports have been submitted on different historic buildings during Feb. 2006 to Sept. 2011, which were requested by the Department of Culture, GoS.
